The 2 of 4  thread holes on my mk1 subframe are corroded, I was looking into using  EZ Lok inserts or welding  the hole closed and retap.  First option seems easier and less risky, but welding it up and tapping seems more permanent, but tapping might be a little difficult.

Any other possible solutions are welcome.

Also, could someone confirm what the thread pattern is for these mk1 subby tower bolts.  I have a cheapo gauge that just says 24.

thanks!

Those are 3/8" UNF.

A suitable repair can be difficult, though looking at yours, I think they'd clean up quite OK.

If you were still concerned, a Helicoil type repair would be quite satisfactory.

yeah, sorry dry.  I live in a 1960 Mini bubble and forget all the variations that ensued.

Thanks, one is slightly worse, so might only need to do one.  Was also looking into different thread locking compounds to help me sleep at night.

+1 for Moke Spider's suggestion about cleaning up the threads.

Would be careful if you do use a 3/8 UNF tap. Very easy to cross thread, which could really stuff the thread.

I suggest trying a good quality 3/8 UNF bolt lubricated with moly grease first, this may be all you need to clean up the threads.

Run a thread chaser down them these will clean up the thread but not remove material, when refitting use a torque wrench don't over tighten them!!

Minimans suggestion is right on the money.

More useful advice here: https://www.autoserv...-threads?Page=2

But not sure if you can easily get UNF thread chasers in the UK...

thanks for the info all, I might try to make a chase with an old bolt.  Since the mounting point is quite meaty, an ez-lok should work.

That's a good way to go.

You can make a poor man's thread chaser from a bolt, by filing a groove, longitudinally on the bolt, across the threads for a good length, that gives somewhere for all the crud to go as you're winding it in.

Thanks all for the insight, I will try to do a post on refurbing my subframe and document my solutions.
