Hey Folks,

I’m replacing the loom of my 1991 Cooper at the moment. It has an electrical pump installed, which failed. Also it’s wiring is catastrophic. There are many wires without any cause.

As I have to replace ans rewire the pump anyway, I’m thinking about using the AZX1817 mechanical pump instead an electrical one.

I’m running twin HS4, 36/31 head, Med 266, Aldon yellow and Maniflow LCB.

Would the mechanical pump be able to deliver enough fuel?

If not, what would be the best pump and best way to re-wire the pump?

Kind regards. :proud:

id go mechanical don't seem to break like the electric ones , if ya use a electric one make its got a crash cut of switch install , other wise the car will have petrol pumped all over the engine if it a big crash and good change off getting burned alive

Counter opinion from me - if the diaphragm on a mechanical goes - it'll happily pump fuel into your oil and turn your engine into a potential bomb..... ok I'm being a little equally over dramatic however true it is....

Electric facet cube jobbie is more effort and  equally a more expensive option but easily installed and reliable  - the shopping list runs to blanking plate, pump , fittings & mounting kit, regulator and inertia switch - for total reliability / redundancy you can fit a pair of pumps in parallel - your can also switch the power as a security measure.

If the mechanical pump will deliver enough fuel for my engine, it seems to be the better bang for the buck.

How often will a fuel pump fail?

I'd say about 60/70,000 miles, probably more
