Last week we went up to Merrit British Columbia Canada to document our friend Mark’s journey as he competed in the Thunderbird rally in his classic mini. Its 1000 klm of forest service roads, covered in ice, in -15c weather, and was an absolute blast! We made this movie about it, please check it out!

Cool video from my province. How does using the handbrake screw up the odometer?

Because the Mini is front wheel drive, on ice & snow the inherent wheel-spin will screw up the odometer reading, which is critical if trying to drive to a set average speed within a second or so early or late. So the odometer is connected to rear wheel sensors and using the handbrake will cause the odometer to under-read, again causing timing errors.

I do recall the early works 850 rally minis having an odometer drive cable connected to a rear wheel for increased accuracy.

Thanks for the answer Cooperman; my first thought was about wheel spin causing issues. I must have missed the part where they said the odometer runs off the rear wheel, but that makes sense now.
