Got a rebuilt 1283 with hif44 carb. Had it tuned last year after initial 500 miles run in and has been running lovely.
Noticed the other day it was taking longer to warm up, lots of spluttering at higher revs for a few miles. Thought that was all it was until today. Started her up, full choke then back to half choke which is my normal routine. Went to drive off and engine just died and would tickover. Can start and rev it it but lots of flat spots almost as if dizzy had shifted round and timing was off.
Checked that and no movement from dizzy, diconnected fuel line and fuel pumping fine. Thought Id try to reset timing so I wound idle right up but couldnt get car to tick over for long enough!
It definitely feels and sounds like a timing issue. Brand new coil, dizzy, alternator, refurb card, new fuel pump so cant understand what could suddenly make the car run so poorly.
Any ideas of what else I could check??

The float is wet but the level must be low as you can see the level at top of carb. Do I fill up to where thread starts.?

Just thinking about the basics really, so plugs leads, rotor cap, arm etc etc.

Check your tappets, make sure nothing has closed up. If there is oil there don't add anymore on the dashpot. Too much oil can cause problems.

Checked dizzy cap and leads all seem ok
Set clearances to 0.015 which seems about right according to my engine spec
No change but did notice when taking plugs out that they are very very coked up.

Getting a pops and bags now when revving car, wont idle at all

Stumped!

Sounds like a fuel issue so possibly something amiss with the carb. If the plugs are very sooty it sounds too rich. Has the car been set up on a rolling road??

Yes that’s the weird thing, was set up last March and only done about 200miles since. Bloody annoying as I had it booked in on Moday locally for another tune and can’t get there now!

Clean the plugs thoroughly and if you have another set try them. I see you are getting basically the same answers on FB as well.

I have had duff plugs in the past.

Sounds like the fuel pump and / fuel line / fuel filter might be worth checking.

Also, before getting too adventurous using spanners with your new engine, I'd suggest referring back to the company who did it so as you don't void your warranty.

Wild card. How old is the exhaust, and any chance of the silencer being blocked?

I have had this happen long time ago on Metro. Would idle OK but no power.

Just a thought, but you have put fresh fuel in it haven't you? If you've not used it for ages the fuel will have gone off.

Phil.
