I thought stale fuel too, or maybe the float needle is not quite doing its job.
If you take the dashpot off, the fuel could be right to the top of the main jet or even running out of it if you flick the starter on/off

Take the air cleaner off and dribble a bit of fuel or spray some hydrocarbon product directly into the carb and see what happens. ( I started a car once with flyspray!, A mates car wouldn't start and I suspected the fuel pump was u/s. All we could find was fly spray. Hey presto! The engine burst into life and ran as long as I sprayed!)
A "mechanic" had told him the fuel pump was ok.... Replaced the pump and all was good...

Sorry for the late reply. Turned out to be plugs! Old ones were very coked up which worry me if engine has been running too rich! Fitted me plugs and all was fine however I decided to change oil today and it had a distinct smell of fuel....pump seems ok and no leaks there so not sure what causing it. My main concern is that the oil has been made thinner by the fuel and not protected engine.
Done and oil and filter change today and will take for another tune in the next few days.
Cheers guys
