Alright so long story short, never had breakdown cover, had a few hiccups but nothing that I've thought ******* I need help  until during the week when I was stranded in the middle of nowhere! Thankfully I got hold of my mate that has access to a trailer, but I had to wait almost 4 bloody hours as he was on a call out!! so I think now is about time I get my own cover. I'm swaying towards AA and the personal cover rather than just a car, but who and what deal are you guys getting? I think the one I am considering is £12 a month

Cheers

Ah, so you've given up on the few tool in the boot, tow rope and a mobile. Although looking round at cover myself (I'm still sticking with the first option) Quite a few won't cover cars 25 years or older.

I'm with Britannia Rescue:-

Personal Cover:

"You and your spouse/partner will be covered as both a passenger or driver in any privately owned vehicle in the UK if one of you is with the vehicle when the breakdown occurs and when we arrive to assist."

I've never really looked into it before and I was actually pleasantly surprised. I have always thought it was like £30 odd a month, but for £12 which covers me as a driver and as a passenger, in any car, recovered to any destination of my choice if they can't get me going seems pretty decent! I probably won't need it again but I suppose for piece of mind that's cheap!

I will take a look at Britannia Rescue now, thanks.

I get the breakdown cover with my insurance, seems to be cheaper that way. I've used it once when my rear wheel bearing seized up so wouldn't have been able to do anything to itat the side of the road anyway.

I've just done this on another forum and got lots of advice, when checked almost all other than RAC and the AA are a waste of money, check the fineprint to see if it's actually any use to you, most only cover cars up to 10 years old, some won't cover motorcycles if that matters to you, some don't come out to vans etc etc.

I'm with rac (as part of a family package that covers the people not the cars) and to be honest on the two occasions I've needed them theyve been average at best. The call out took over an hour each time and despite being told it was a mini with 10" wheels they sent a transit with a dolly that can't tow cars with less than 10" wheels! when I've called them out its always been to faults that can't be fixed road side

I'm with Autoaid.  £43 a year, any age car.  You used to have to pay for recovery at the point of use, and claim it back from Autoaid but they've stopped that now and it's just like AA/ RAC et al, except they use local (to you) contractors.  They take you home or to a garage, your choice.

No point paying more.

I'm 99.99999% certain that's one of the ones I was suggested and buried deep in the small print is the part about cars up to a certain age only, took me a while to find it.

Looks like they've changed the policy very recently, that could actually be a viable option now!

RH Specialists policies have breakdown cover included. Only used it once when I sheared a halfshaft on the Minor and didn't wait too long for them to come out. Always found their prices to be very competitive too - but the cover is for the car on the policy.

RAC with Tesco's vouchers, they cover any age car, bike or most other things under 6.5m long and 3.5t. Not cheap if you buy without the vouchers but remember you can use other people's vouchers too, so last time it cost us £30 for everything except replacement car cover.

Still have a good selection of tools and spares in the boot as well.

I have the car covered through Adrian flux. on the one occasion I have needed to use it, head gasket went, they recovered the car back to my house in a reasonable time so can't fault it.

I used to have personal cover with Britannia rescue and they always provided a great service. It just isn't cost effective anymore as Carole Nash bundle breakdown cover in with their bike policies.
