What’s the difference between genuine hinges and the repro pattern parts?

I have recently started a project and the hinges I have are very poor and I want to avoid using them. I also want to replace with something better than the ones I have taken off.

If I get second hand and replace the roll pins will this remove any play in the hinges?

Thanks in advance!

Normally the worst thing that happens to mk3 onwards hinges is the studs break off when you remove them..it's an easy job to grind down the existing weld and put a new stud in.

It's a bit of a long story, but I have a Domino HT that I am restoring. The hinges have been hacked in an attempt to fit badly hung doors. Every hinge is loose at the pivot pin and I cant be sure if the pins are worn or they have been drilled to remove the pins in the past...

I'd rather start from good second hand or new parts and hang the doors right from the off.

My thoughts are if I hang the doors to the new hinges and get the gaps right and they don't catch anywhere when being opened and closed, I shouldn't have any problems for the foreseeable future.

In the middle price wise between the genuine and the copies, the DSN classics alloy hinges are lovely quality and save a little weight.

You have to be on a serious diet to warrant buying lightweight hinges... They do look like a good product though from the pictures I've found.

I didnt buy them for the weight saving, but i must say it didnt hurt in persuading my bank card out my wallet.  Much like yourself, mine had been fiddles with in the past, welded a few times by previous owners (with different threads) and the pins were a little sloppy, so i went for them as they were cheaper than originals....... and i do like shiny things!

It does help if you can find a persuasion.

Don't know if these hinges may be any use to you for one side of your car, perhaps you've already seen this?

Thanks for the link. I had seen them. Typically I have started with the passenger side door so need that side first!

minidaves has sent me some hinges which should be more than adequate. hopefully I will receive them at the weekend so I can get the doors somewhere near hung!
