Hi all

I'm putting together my mpi to get it through th French mot.

Here's the problems I'm having, engine running wise:

It wont start unless the throttle is pressed.

It runs rough, coughs and splutters and wants to stall.

It sometimes backfires through the inlet.

But, as it warms up, it gets better, smooth out, stops backfiring.

Anyone got an idea of what's going on ??????

Thanks

Pete.

Have you the ability to get diagnostics on it? Could be anything! Sounds like an inlet air temp / coolant temp senor potentially the fact it gets better when hot is a good pointer to a temp sensor of some sort

Surely if it was the cam sensor it wouldn't start.

No air leaks that I can find.

Classic rocker cover.

Don't have diagnostics, nobody here in France seems to have one. I have a code reader but doubt that would be of any use !

Changed no, Old one put back on, in the correct way, not out by 180°. If I remeber correctly it is a LUC one.

Pete,

Maybe worth removing a sensor and starting it to see if the symptoms are still present. It will help eliminate them.

Steve,

funny you should say that, I did it yesterday, first with the lamda and it didn't really change anything. So what does a dodgy one cause ? problem wise ?

then with the MAP and that did make a big difference, even harder to start, so it is doing something but maybe not what it should be doing.

Is there a cheap diagnostics system out there that can test my sensors ???

Pete.

I've been reading up on a lot of MPIs doing silly things and people have been talking about AP clutches that shouldn't be used.

I don't think this is my problem, but you never know.

Is there a way to check the reluctor ring placement through the starter motor hole ?

Place engine at top dead centre on cylinder 1. Remove starter and crank sensor. Use a marker pin through the centre of the sensor hole and mark the reluctor ring and flywheel. Rotate engine clockwise until those marks can be seen through the starter aperture. Count number of teeth from first missing tooth. Should be 3 from memory. If the marks line up with missing tooth, clutch is probably incorrect.

Hi sprocket, (or anyone who knows) can you tell me how to get the n°1 cylinder to TDC ?

Thanks.

Pete.

its marked on the crank pulley, it'll point to the last (well should do) arrow on the timing cover.
