I'm currently trying to fit the wings and front panel, but having problems with the bonnet gaps. The wings are an okay fitting to the scuttle and front panel but seem to not fit well with the bonnet.

The wings are magnum and the front panel is m-machine.

I've attached some photos of the gaps. I can adjust the positioning of the bonnet to make one of the gaps okay, but results in the other sides gap being too big.

Would altering the bonnet be the easiest/cheapest option? I'm not too keen on having to buy a pair of genuine wings.

It looks like your past the point of no return now that its all welded up!

the easiest solution is to cut the side of the bonnet, about 10mm from the edge and let in a strip of steel to widen it.

I have done the same and its a relatively easy job. Just stitch weld it slowly to prevent distorting the main bonnet section.

You will never notice it once its ground back and a skim of filler on it.

Thanks for the reply. Everything is only clamped in place at the moment. But what you've suggested seems like the way to go as I've seen on here a couple of other people have taken that route.
Alternatively could I weld steel strips on the outer edge of the bonnet instead of cutting into it?

its a push pull love affair, spend time, and screw it all together before welding. also make sure you have a gen bonnet

As Dave has said that can go over further, several things to do.

Make sure the lip of the inner wing is not fouling the edge of the wing!!

How is the fit of the wing to scuttle?? how big a gap as that is looking low at the back.

DONT weld a strip to the edge of the wing, its wrong and will bug you. As already mentioned if you cannot close the gap by forcing the wing over then cut a slit down the length of the bonnet and add a section in. Its a pain to do well but worth it in the end.

its very difficult to advise on this without actually being there.

but....I would say, ignore lining the d/s wing up with the front panel at first, just get the bonnet to wing gap right first. also ignore trying to get it to fit with the A-panel

push it right over and try to clamp it to the top of the inner wing panel. once you get that right, put a couple of self tappers in. then look at manipulating the front panel to fit the curvature of the wing where it now sits. once you have that, clamp it in place.

then check back at the bonnet wing gap to make sure nothing at the front has pulled that. if that's still goo, then look at getting the a-panel to fit.

hope that helps. thats the order I do it in anyway and ive done a fair few to say the least.

I don't think I have ever seen such a wide wing gap, at least you can check the oil without opening the bonnet :-)

Seriously though, as above the scuttle gap is the most important as its the most difficult to modify, if this is level then start fiddling with the wing gaps.  I would suggest tacking the rear of the wing (against the scuttle) so that the gap at this end is correct and then working at the front do the same between the wing and front panel.  You can alter the gap around the seam between the wing and front panel to the arch as required (especially if you have wheel arches to hid any slight misalignment.

Be careful about modifying the bonnet as suggested above unless you have checked how the grille will look, its no good adding half an inch to the bonnet and finding that the grille strip along the front is then too short (obviously less of a problem with a mk1 grille).

Although it might look a bit grim now with perseverance you should be able to make it look fine, if the inner wing is too far over then it might worth ignoring the front panel to inner wing connection at this stage, that can always be bent/moved over if necessary.

Best of luck.

Looking at your pictures again I think you may be trying to line the wing to front panel up against the the wheel arch, don't do this line it up against the inner wing and bonnet.

You can always sort out that arch at a later date, how much work this is depends upon the type of arch, i.e. proper wheel arches the fit doesn't need to be as good as it will be hidden whereas just the trim strip will require a little bit more work.

I'm afraid this is why its called panel beating and not flat pack assembly, don't worry though if you make a mistake, we have all done it and a bit of work and a light skim of body filler usually puts things right if you end up with unwanted dents/creases.

Thanks for all the replies. I welded in the wings today, and managed to reduce that gap slightly by manoeuvring things around as much as could. But there is still a gap so I'll be altering the bonnet in the next few days.
