just wondering what it might be worth,

 

ive been offered a shell and v5 as part payment on a job I'm doing for someone. I was considering doing all the restoration on the body shell between other jobs, fitting up the doors bonnet and boot lid and then selling it on.

 

what would it be worth do you think?

 

its an 88 mayfair I think, so nothing exciting, but it would be totally rot free and a top job

I’m also interested in this, might be selling my project. The prices on eBay seem to have no consistency whatsoever with shells needing work/ rolling projects that need work selling anywhere between £300-800. There’s no examples of rust free shells

I agree, ebay can be very misleading when trying to use it to value something.

 

I know what people pay to have their own shell restored, I'm just wondering if people are prepared to pay the same to buy one fully finished ready to be painted??

The most I got for my rust free shell minus a front end (flip front) with v5 was £300, so going from that people on hear just aren't prepared to pay for a bare shell, when you can buy a full car needing work, but with all the bits.

I paid £350 for a bare shell and logbook a few weeks back, and that needs about a months worth of welding doing to it! lol

Yeah £300 seems to be the going rate for a basket case. Theres this thread from 6 years ago saying £750 is the going rate:

Restored shells don't fetch as much money as you'd think.
If it made more than £1000 - £1500 I'd be surprised.

People would rather pay to have their own car done than buy a shell

I thought that may be the case shifty, I wondered if it was worth doing or not, ive considered building it up and seeing if I could finish it over time, but wondered if selling it part finished, ie, just welded up might be viable.

ok lets take a different direction.

solid base shells are always needed for motorsport. i am guessing that you have a jig so that you can provide the shell as being straight and true? you are then looking at supplying a totally different level of shell front ends are not always needed.and you may pick up extra work with the fitting of a supplied cage. paint may not be needed as they have stuff still to add.

 

the reason i say this is the straightness. yes most of us building our own cars can do most things having a jig to weld to is a rarity unless you are doing every day. and it is always nice to start with something that is "Right".
