Freshly Rebuilt 1310. Bad Noise Or Lumpy Cam?

Best Answer zebigfatman , 17 March 2018 - 09:42 PM

Hi everyone, just wanted to say thanks for all the advice! Turns out it was the edge rockers hitting the inside of the cover. Munched some metal out of the cover and also filed down the corners of the rockers and it is fine now. Sounds good (despite the lack of vacuum advance)

Again cheers! Go to the full post

Yep, mine needed the circular cup (oil thrower?) Removed from the inside and a small indent bashing out. It sounded pretty rough like yours before I did that!

I have heard that kind of noise from both the timing cover fowling with duplex timing gear fitted, and also from the two outer most rocker arms fowling the rocker cover with some types of roller rockers/cover combinations.

Yeah, end float was checked. Think it was just over 2 thou. Cant really remember now but it was within tolerance. but the bearing clearances were not, just assumed you took it on faith that they were ok.

Anyhow guys, I wont get the chance to check till the weekend but the timing cover sounds promising. I did triple check all of the crank related torques before the gearbox went on so I'm pretty sure it isn't anything bottom end related.

Will keep you updated!

From a good machine shop you can, but its still wise to check, and knowing where your crank was from you certainly can't.

They are the nearest machine shop to me and since the 1980's the last I would use.

See Petrol Petes post 1323 p89 that gives a recent experience why.

My bets on the crank.

To be fair, if it is a brand new crank it won’t have been through their machine shop (although they could’ve supplied the wrong bearings!)

+1 for the timing cover, had what sounds like exactly the same noise on a simplex to duplex chain conversion. Had to beat the little dimple out on the cover and it went away

I had a similar noise with mine on first start up, turned out to be the flywheel catching on the transfer case, don't know if this is a common issue but someone suggested to me that the flywheel/clutch hub was going onto the crankshaft to far though I have about 80 thou clearance between the hub and primary gear 'C' washer, only thing I came up with was my original transfer case was knackered so I replaced it with one from a very late car with the sensor port in it. Sorted the problem by fettling the case with a file the amount the flywheel was catching by was minimal.

I really don't know about the clearance.  I just wanted to be safe to be honest.

I am going to tell minispares the rocker cover does not fit over the rockers as advertised though.

Also, anyone got advice for fitting twin hs2s? I had real difficulty fitting them even when the engine is out. (very little room for the manifold nuts and a spanner).

Do you normally take the carbs off the manifold and bolt that on first?

i would not bother with twin HS2s, HS4s maybe but a single HIF44 on a sorted inlet any day.

but back to your question. got to love 3/8" drive kit. all on as one.

Always hard to tell on a video, but as above rockers touching the rocker cover could be it,

I would also whip the wok off and take a look, I have heard bolts trough the engine mount touching the pressure plate make a racket like that.

Drop gear with excessive clearance is another, but it sounds too regular for that.

After all that I'd be looking at oil pressure, and the crank clearances.

Also try it without the fastest in case it's somthing on the waterbuck or alternator

Doh! guess who only read the first page....
