Hi! There's a hole in the gearbox under the engine on the mini I've recently bought. Does this mean the whole engine and gearbox needs to be replaced? or Is it possible to replace just the gearbox?

yes you can just replace the gearbox, but it would be worth checking the engine over before you purchase another gear box.

Yes, you can replace just the gearbox. Why don't  you post pictures? It'll help with your issue.

I have just received confirmation from my mechanic, it's in the gearbox. I had initially thought it was the engine.   As the engine and gearbox are one unit I was confused. I have a photo of it.

well, it looks like number forr con rod has muched through the gear case, so an engine problem has caused this, your going to need to replace both engine and gearbox as there will be issues with each.

Youll need to take it all apart and discover exactly what has failed.

The damage is consistent with serious engine failure.

It doesn't look good. I suggest if you have someone who can take it apart for you then ask them to do it. It looks terminal from the picture so its not a question of will a replacement affect the value. What you need to do is find out if the block is salvageable and once it's in pieces post some pictures.

I would love to take that apart. Would be great fun.if you cant remove the engine yourself. Ask to keep it and take it apart if nothing else would be a great learning exercise

The actual story is pretty embarrassing. I flew all the way to Inverness from Watford to go and buy this mini as it was the only mini cooper I could pretty much afford. The plan was to buy it and drive it back to Watford (550 miles). I know it sounds stupid and it probably was but I have always wanted a classic mini and it's the only car I've ever wanted so I couldn't stop myself lol

 

I bought it and not even 6 miles down the road, it blew up on me. Luckily I had AA recovery and I managed to bring the mini home and now I slowly want to restore it and keep it forever! I don't have a garage, the tools or the knowledge to fix anything myself. I'm just hoping to get it done slowly.

Pity yo didn't do the 6 miles on a test drive before handing over the money. Shame this is going to cost you somewhat.

There was a test drive but owner drove it as I didn't have insurance before purchasing it. It'll cost more than anticipated but at least I'll finally have a mini! Hopefully!

Are you going to try and do some of it yourself. They're a great car to start to learn the basics of the mechanicals especially as the engine and box are already shot?
