Is the garage a Mini specialist? It is important that whoever does the work understands Minis, or at least classic cars in general.

Modern garages are only fit for changing parts and don't seem to understand re-engineering old and possibly damaged parts, which is what happens with older classics.

I still can't believe you took it home.
6 miles out from the sellers house?? I'd of walked there and got my money back.

100% they knew something was up with it, very rare for such catastrophic damage to just magically happen once you've got 5 minutes away.

I was somewhere near Inverness and in a lot of shock and was trying to get the AA to do the recovery. They initially said that I wasn't eligible as I hadn't been a member for long enough so was on the phone for ages and spoke to abt 5 different people before they admitted I was eligible. I just wanted to get the car home. It certainly was an ordeal.

Arggg... feel sorry for the OP.

Awesome too see so many people offering to help though. There is always hope!

Thanks Mr TobyM2018. I just hope it all works out. The mini community has been very helpful and I appreciate it all. Only fellow mini lovers can understand why I did what I did I suppose. Thankfully the Mrs has been very supportive.

It's with the real mini company in Oxford. They only do classic minis and nothing else. Have you guys heard of them? They seem really nice and understanding.

I can only sympathise with your circumstances.  What should have been a start of a love affair with a car has certainly caused you some grief.  I am pleased you are still enthusiatic for a mini and I am sure, after a few weeks, you will be up and running.  I will follow this post and hope for a good news soon.  All the very best, I wish I was nearer to help.

Thank you Mr Floormanager. The thought is all that matters. I'll be honest, I wasn't too fond of minis for a few days after but it's all back now and I can't wait for mine to get restored. Hoping to do the Brighton run.

When it starts to get expensive, drop me a message ill take you out in my mini and remind you of the fun. I have two. A 1986 City E carb, and a 1996 Cooper SPI. But the cooper is sorn atm and needs a fan putting in when i can be bothered

Given that this episode is going to cost you an arm and a leg the positive side, assuming you end up with a fully overhauled engine and gearbox, is you will have an MPI Mini with zero engine and gearbox mileage. When you tot up the cost at the end of the day you will have a fast fabulous Mini that when compared to other cars on the road of similar performance and mileage is an bargain.

Cooperman, this is somewhat incomplete. They only seem to be able to change the parts that the computer tells them to change.

Thank you! I'll keep that in mind. I have a classic mini driving experience next month which I got as a birthday present so I'm looking forward to that. When I bought the mini, it was the first time I had ever got inside one lol

Hope u get the fan put it in. Good luck.

According to the mini specialist, the sourced engine is from another mini that's been written off (always sad to hear) but it's only done abt 20K apparently. Providing it all works out, you are right I'll have a pretty decent mini which I can keep for years. Looking forward to it 🙂
