At the weekend I noticed that my heater fan only works on the second/full speed & not on number one the slowest. Its a 1998 MPI cooper.
Before I go pulling things apart is there any common issue with these?

The resistor packs die and there are no replacements for them. You can try and find a suitable resistor to put in its place but no one so far has given an answer.

Here's a TMF link to wiring up a single speed fan to convert to

2 speed with a resister see the 6th post

I doubt a 10w resistor is sufficient, would need to be rated higher than that. I also think the link has changed as it now takes you to a selection of 10w resistors, not the 3.3ohm 25watt he quoted

Infact I'd be tempted to go even higher than 25w, I'd be happier with something closer to 100w so I know that the resistor will be capable of reducing the voltage without getting too hot under my dash! I can't remember what the heater pulls current wise, and what power rating really would be sufficient but the higher the better, within reason, imo

I converted my SPI heater to 2 speed which is the same casing as the MPI. Have a look at post Number 575 in my thread here -----> http://www.theminifo...rebuild/page-39

Clamp maker,
That looks amazing. Going to have to go through your entire thread. Kinda mad I saw the end before the beginning. It looks very well sorted indeed.

Was wondering what you plan on using for the blower motor switch?

Sorry missed this, thanks!

I'm using 2 toggle switches as like lots of other things I've done, the heater mechanisms modified as well

Did you also modify your SPi heater to look more like a Mki unit?

yep, modified the mechanism so it's up down rather than left right and made an aluminium panel to cover it all, which I had engraved today with off, screen and car.

Hi all, glad to find an on going topic on what I need to know.  I have an 89 mini rose single speed fan, always found it a bit noisy so thought I would get around to this fan switch conversion eventually. I have recently bought a Rover P4 heater control which had on it a variable speed fan switch, or rheostat as it is known, check out Lucas rheostat on ebay.  This was and still is used on P4s, series 1 Land rovers and other cars. It would be an easy fit on a mini and works well, the problem is it got very hot, to hot for me to fit permanently and feel safe. The switch is old so maybe this is the cause, any ideas before I spend my money?

Please post pix. Where do you have it mounted? If not directly in the fans path, it’s going to hot. It need to be mounted in the fan housing to be cooled by the fan it turns on.

I actually just received my MPI two speed switch. Need to sort the rheostst here in the US and I’ll give this go. I Agee, the motor is too loud sometimes.
