Camshaft Issue

Best Answer macaldron , 16 March 2018 - 03:45 PM

Update - Swiftune responded. It's a manufacturing issue.  The ball is supposed to be there, but it is not properly located.  They apologized, and a replacement cam is already on its way.  I'll be all set Mon!

I am putting together a 1330 engine, and have run into an issue with the camshaft.  When I install the cam, then the oil pump, then the end gasket, timing plate and triangle thrust, the thrust will not sit flush on the timing plate - it binds on the end of the camshaft.  The camshaft is being pushed too far toward the timing gear in its bore. What seems like a the possible culprit is a metal ball inserted in the slot end of the camshaft, which is interfering with the oil pump. The oil pump driver contacts the ball, and when I properly bolt the oil pump to the block, the cam is shifted at least 1/16" too far, causing the binding.

Photo of the metal ball in the slot attached.

Has anyone ever seen this before?  Could there be something else going on?  Any insight appreciated! (I have already contacted the camshaft manufacturer...waiting for a response...)

Has it been 'cross-drilled' for an oil-way through the Cam?

There are holes in each lobe, so yes, cross drilled.

Mmmm,,,, only a guess here, but I suspect that the ball is fitted to plug the oil-way through the cam, only it would seem that the drill wondered and the recess for the plug (a ball here) is not only in  a bad spot, but not deep enough.

If it's new, I'd be sending it back. If it's used, you may have to grind a wee bit off the spade of the Oil Pump.

Thanks. Still trying to get swiftune to respond to this. I am on the west coast of usa, so while sending back seems like the best option, it's significantly inconvenient.

I have a SW05-07 sitting on my bench at work, I'll have a look at mine and see if it has a similar ball.
