I feel this might be a bit of a long shot but I am hoping for a bit of help...

I have a 1995 mini Mayfair spi.

It has suddenly cut out whilst driving and now is turning over but wont start. We have checked the obvious causes ie fuel, spark plugs, battery etc and still no joy. As the engine is turning over we feel it is likely an electrical fault somewhere (which I know is a headache for any mini owner ;-) ) so just wanted to ask if anyone else has had similar problems and found the cause as I dont want to start replacing bits unncecesarily and also to try and save a bit of time to find it.

If anyone has any other ideas of what it could be if not electrical they would also be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Most likely culprit is the fuel cutoff on the bulkhead in the right hand side (as you look in)

Or you lost a connection to the coil

Start by first resetting the inertia cut off switch.

If the engine starts and runs when it has been allowed to cool down, it may be the crankshaft sensor that's causing the problem.

Thanks everyone for your replies

The AA checked the coil and said it wasnt working properly so we replaced and still no joy. We had talked about the crankshaft sensor - we had this go on our everyday runner (Hyundai i30), but when that went it would intermittently cut out and not start so wasnt 100 % sure about on the mini.

We will have another look at the cut off switch too, we had tried it but are they likely to be faulty to stop the fuel or a fuse to it?

Did you checked your vacuum lines? Fuelcondensor between ecu/injection full? Crank sensor connector clean? You can short your manifold switch. Fuel pump turning on? If you take the airfilter of is the injector injecting?

First thing I would check is the fuel pump ,stick your head in the boot and have somebody turn on the ignition( not cranking) ,you should hear the pump run for a few seconds and stop. If you don't hear it than reset the inertia switch and check two fuses . Fuse 8 is power to the fuel pump relay and fuse 11 is power to the pump itself. If this doesn't work I would remove the inertia switch and check that it is closed properly.

If the pump is working I would put a HT lead onto a spare spark plug and check for a spark.

The fuel pump appears to be working (can hear it when putting ignition on) but will definitely have a closer look at the inertia switch and plugs as a starting point.
Thanks everyone, will post back if any joy once we have a better look.

I have the similar case on my 97 SPI few years ago, you may have a leaking diaphragm inside the pressure regulator. not difficult to remove, worth to check it

Could be the SPI relay pack failing

Have you tried looking at the rotor arm in the distributor cap? If there is a bad connection that might be the problem.

Best regards,

Thanks everyone for your replies. We have had another good look today and sadly is still putting up a fight. The fuel pump, cut off appears fine and the injectors are working fine.
The ignition coil looks like it is getting power but isnt transferring it to the spark plugs and gets hot. We have put on another coil and no joy. We have checked the distributor cap, leads and we have traced the wiring and checked the fuse. We have previously cleaned the crankshaft sensor but so far not replaced - i am going to replace it to rule it out though. Has anyone had similar problems with the ignition coil and found the solution?
