Question On Rear Suspension -> Too High On Rear ?

Best Answer timmy850 , 19 March 2018 - 02:43 AM

It might also be that the front is too low if the cones are old and compressed. What is the ride height like at the front end?

My car is at about 8-10 cm at the back between the top of the tyre and bottom of the guard. The cars sat pretty high from the factory

Hi all,

Looking for some advice. Our 1988 is relatively high on the rear suspension. After checking the shock absorbers we found out the cone and strut are keeping the car quite high and we wonder if this is right / do we have the right struts ?

See picture of the current struts. They are 45 cm height.

Thanks !

looks standard to me. not that there were many options as all later ones had the same trumpets.

Were the knuckles fully inserted in the cups?? How new are the cones??

Shock absorbers will not have anything to do with the height.

Thanks...  yes knuckles are fully in the cups... understand the that the shock absorbers have nothing to do with the height, but due to the struts the shock absorbers are fully extended and the car is relatively high on its wheels (lot of space approx. 10 cm between wheels 12'' and arches).

If everything has just been assembled or the car has been on jacks it will take a while to settle to its ride height being rubber and not coil springs.

Take a look if the knuckle didn't slip out and locks the trailing arm.
Or if the cone didn't drop a bit and is resting against the raised section of the subframe. Both things I've encountered with mine and had me puzzeling for a while.

That actually looks to be a Van / Moke type, which is 1/8" longer and has a bigger flange than a Saloon type.

and the part nos. to ID them

They did I believe fit the Van / Moke type to the rear of the Saloon much later and if I recall only to those that had the 13" wheels.

Are the knuckles genuine? Could they be a tad longer if not maybe.

Annoyingly I've just put mine back in yesterday or I could have measured them for you.

Your cone looks good and pert compared to the flattened ones I've removed so I can imagine it will sit at the higher height for a while, could be an unknown cone that's either too firm or too long if the knuckle and trumpet are correct.

It should have 12A1683 Saloon Trumpets. By the looks of it, it has 12A1684 Van Trumpets.

I'm not certain that's right Nick, it maybe, but I recall looking in to this some time back and I recall that they came in on the saloons much later. There was a member here (ex-Rover guy) who was involved with it all and he shed some light on it too.

i know it the 90s there brought in the front knuckle with built in spacer not aware of anything at the rear. but i am sure you will find something if it is there.

Yes and If I recall, the Van Trumpets were bought in at the same time to keep things even-steven. Again, I could be wrong.
