Question On Rear Suspension -> Too High On Rear ?

Best Answer timmy850 , 19 March 2018 - 02:43 AM

It might also be that the front is too low if the cones are old and compressed. What is the ride height like at the front end?

My car is at about 8-10 cm at the back between the top of the tyre and bottom of the guard. The cars sat pretty high from the factory

Thanks all. I checked the numbers and indeed it is 21A1684 struts that causes the height.

Anyone has the struts of a saloon available ?

So what year is your car? As some have mentioned above they might be correct for a post 1984 car with 12" wheels

Thanks, you are right it is a 1988 car so should be correct then ?

It also says in the text ' If you had the suspension lowered by cutting the trumpets and you want to restore to the standard ride height and appearance, these alloy trumpets make it possible

So it is known that the car at the rear is above standard ride height and can be adjusted by adjusting (cutting ?) the trumpets or buy HILO set ?

Just cut a bit off the trumpet where it meets the knuckle. Every 10mm off will lower it 50mm approx

If the cones and trumpets are correct and you cut the trumpet down before the cones have settled the rear will end up too low.

I'll see if I can see the numbers on mine tonight, I suspect yours is like mine and the front has sunk making the rear look way too high.

Did I miss a chapter because I couldn't see where he said he'd just fitted these parts, rather he had removed them to see why his car is so high?

Factory low mileage 1995 car, I've painted them satin black but the number is clearly visible.

As I recall, by then they were fitted. I think it was in fact 1988 was the C/P.

It wasn't to do with the 12" wheels - the 1275GT had those from circa 1974 and on Saloon Trumpets.

but the GT had a spacer added between the knuckle and trumpet.

Not from the factory (listing published in 1981 after the 1275 GT had finished production so covered them all)

Even if you are right there's no structural or weight difference between mine and the OPs car on the rear so there's no need for him to go looking for the other trumpets that may or may not have been fitted to earlier cars, the fact he has them already and the factory records say it should and they work perfectly well in my totally stock Mayfair rules them out as the issue on all counts, either the cones are wrong, the knuckles wrong, they are fitted wrong or there's actually nothing wrong and the rear just looks high either compared to saggy front cones or the unknown rear cones are just fresh and need to settle, swapping trumpets isn't the answer here.

If it is too high purely on looks then a hi-lo kit is the answer, at least then if they do settle the op can raise the rear, once the trumpets are cut they are stuck at that length.
