having started my mini after the garage storage from September it seems to be idling high when i push the clutch in 2500 rpm. The only way to stop it is to push the accelerator  slightly when the clutch is pressed in. this causes it to idle around 1000 - 1500 rpm.  Im currently having to use my MPI as my everyday car as my commuting car is off the road so could do with fixing this asap.

can anyone advise the best solution to stop this from happening as i guess its a sensor fault with the throttle body.

thanks

So you're saying when you dip the clutch the idle goes to 2500 and you stop it by pushing the accelerator?

I've had this way back when I ran mems MPi, think I created a thread on here about it. Things to check :

  • Wires behind airbox to make sure non are freyed or shorting (esp around the airbox clips)
  • Make sure throttle cable isnt sticking
  • Carefully remove the IACV, and check that this isnt sticking, and smooth in operation.
  • Use electrical contact cleaner on the electric connectors on the throttle body
  • Take the airbox off and make sure the throttle body isnt warped.

I chased this for months, it got to the point where it would all of a sudden idle at 4k revs, like the throttles stuck open (not good on a motorway I can tell you!)

Changed tb, sensors, Iacv on mine and it still played up.

In the end for me it was the TPS, be aware if you remove this or fit a new one, you'll need an ACR4 (lifeline for an mpi owner), which tells you how much to adjust the TPS 'stop' to get it in align. Also error codes (previous), can throw the car into not running fully right, these can be cleared on an acr4 too.

Hope this helps!

thanks for the help. i will a look tonight and go through your list of faults. I have had issues before with the throttle body when i pushed the clutch in it would cut the engine out coming to junctions. So i seem to have the opposite.

The ACR4 are coming up around £250 on eBay so probably worth taking it to my local mini specialist if none of the above work.

ok i have checked all these and all seems ok.  i took the LACV off and it seemed fairly new and and looked ok. checked the cable and its returning freely. contacts looked good on the blue plug to the LACV sensor and wires looked good.

narrowing it down its most likely the throttle position sensor.
