OK I know that before a vowel, 'a' becomes 'an', but I must have had a day off school when they said about 'an' hotel etc. Can't understand why this should be! Ahh the vagaries of the English Language!!

The key to knowing which indefinite article to use lies in the sound a word makes when spoken out loud. If a word starts with a consonant sound, it should be preceded by ‘a’ regardless of how it is spelled. We pronounce it historic, if it were pronounced istoric, we would precede it with an.

Hotel is derived from the French word and in the English language is pronounced otel, that’s why we precede it with an.

Ahh but, me & these come from the part of the land that pronounces the 'H' so it is a Historic and NOT an Istoric!

Most people don't stress the 'H' otherwise you'd sound like Kaa from Jungle book!
