Evening all

Currently rebuilding A 998 block and I'm looking for a little extra power. Don't want to swap to a 1275 due to insurance costs. I've got all the bolt on upgrades bought already but I was wondering whether or not a camshaft upgrade would be worth it. And if so, are there any good drop in upgrades which wouldn't need new rockers etc. As I'm sure you can tell my knowledge is very minimal so any tips would be appreciated.

Cheers,

James

Until a fully gas-flowed head and a better induction and exhaust system is fitted, there is little, if any, gain to be had by changing the cam.

In the 60+ year-old A-Series engine, the head is the key to releasing a bit more 'grunt'. Ideally the 12G295 head, suitably modified/gas-flowed, is best, but they are both expensive and hard to fine now.

while your building it put a upgrade cam in you can always modify head later. mate's got sw5 in his 998 with stage 1 kit says goes quite well. thats what i would do

Im running a 266 in my 998. Definitely worth it whilst the engine is out.

I don't know if you have spoken to your insurance company yet, but I suspect a camshaft swap on a 998 will cost you, assuming you declare it. A straight 1275 MIGHT turn out to be a cheaper route.

My braided brake hoses cost me, even tho they are safer. What I find strange is they are classed as an electrical modification.

I kept my 998 as standard and took the hit on a Stage 1 kit which is well worth it.

Good luck with your changes.

I'm running a "940" head on my 998. Pocketed block, and raised compression to 10.5:1. Cooper Freeflow manifold + 2xHS2. It goes _much_ _much_ better than standard. The head _really_ made a massive difference. Also avoid the cheap LCB's with poor collectors and crap design. Get a good well known brand

Many years ago I had a 998. I fitted a 295 head that I bought for £25 (OK the head needed a bit of work) and an MG Metro 800 cam and LCB and 'S' system. Single 1 1/2" SU. It made 69 bhp at the flywheel. Sounded nice too. Now I am getting nostalgic.

Yea I had a 998 with a 12g295 head I got for £50 from a scrap yard (!) And a MG metro cam off eBay for £20. Doubt you could find that now. The MG cam is a decent cheep alternative to the other lot, I have another one in my 1275.

That is pretty impressive for simple cheap mods.
