Is there a modern material you would recommend that new bushes could be made from? As you know the gear in my engine has the proper bushes, but as they are getting scarce and the new type bushes aren't suitable, is there a material readily available that new bushes could be turned from? Or is the steel backed bush a tricky one?

The current minispares bushes are fine, given the correct running clearances and initial pre lube. I now supply a special pre lube to install the gear with in gears I machine. I have been doing around 10 to 15 gears a year for the last 15 or so years for myself and those in the trade and have only had 3 problems in all that time. One was due to the type of material the top hat bush was made from (billeted bronze) and the other 2 was the front bearing and that was my fault attempting to run too tight a clearance. My experiences are not the same as Moke spider. The Minispares bushes work well.

Fair enough Adrian and thanks for your post, however;-

My experiences are not the same as Mike spider.

My experience with them is not mine alone. No one here I know of has had success with them, despite clearances being opened up and all manner of lubricants being tried.

<Edit: All the Bearing people, including bushing manufacturer's and engineers I've spoken to regarding specifically this over the past year or so, here, in the UK and the US have all said the same thing in regards to these bushes in this application - " Not suited". The evidence of this is in the photos in the thread links ^. The Deva Bushes we know works and doesn't damage crankshafts. >

I've had 150hp so far through a primary gear with this new rear bush, the gear also has the Minispares floating front bush. I ALWAYS use wheel bearing grease on ALL bearing surfaces when being built up. Often, the grease is still there when it comes apart again.

I'm unsure you properly understand how they work and what they are called on to do, but that's not the issue.
