I have had my mini away in the garage and put a tray under it to see if i had any leaks. This is what i found. the leak looks like its coming from the gear box (not the oil, the coolant) (well i think it is) i'm not very good with cars lol. Anyone know where the leak would be coming from and how to stop it?

Thank you

What type of engine is it? As the engine is above the gearbox, coolant will leak down the outside of the box. Which side of the car is leaking? Is the engine a runner? You need to thoroughly clean the engine and box off and then start it up and see where the leak is coming from rather than where it's ending up.

Classic Mini's are notorious for leaking oil. Depends how long the try was under the car, but that wouldn't bother me. You can replace all the seals and gaskets, but it won't long before you start getting drops of oil on the garage floor again. Just keep and eye on it and the oil level on the dipstick.

I think he's asking about the coolant leak, not the oil. Everyone knows the oil is good for keeping the rust at bay. :proud:

Unless it's an auto and it's ATF.
The gearbox is the whole bottom of the engine, so quite impossible for us to guess where it could be. You'll have to take a torch and take a look under the bonnet ;)

You don't use ATF in the auto.

The oil drips at the back is probably the rod change oil leak, easy to identify clean the oil off the rod change and see if it appears again. Cooling wise. Id like to hope radiator bottom hose.

Plus guys, am i right in saying pink antifreeze shouldn't be used unless its a new ally radiator? Old soldered brass radiators require blue antifreeze? Which arnt compatible with each other?

Someone confirm or deny before changing?

Stick with blue anti freeze, its safe with brass or alloy rads.
Pinks ok with alloy but corrodes solder in brass.

Cheers for the info guys, its a 998 1987 mini city, manual and the coolant leak is coming from the opposite side to the rad (driver side). Also the engine runs (just in storage atm)

Clean it off and have a look at where it's tracking from; just because its finishing up at the flywheel end doesn't mean its starting there. Has it got the heater take off on the head if so is that ok?
