Has anyone actually measured the DSN gasket compared to other gaskets? I've thought I'd done the same, using a minispares gasket set which had 2 gaskets in and also had the DSN one. the grey one from DSN measured 0.42mm, the grey one from the minispares kit also 0.42mm and the blue one from minispares 0.44mm. (Theres a hole in the DSN plate where the gasket over hangs into which I cut a piece out)

Have you fitted a gasket between the fancy aluminium casing at the engine block? And if so was it the correct thickness?

 
Sprocket - I think this one belongs to you for an answer, chap!
 
So i bit the bullet and pulled the whole thing apart. Measured everything then gasket I put on Vs the spare on I have here. Turns out the gasket supplied with the DSN cover is thicker at 1.0mm and the standard rover item is 0.4mm. Typically I installed the Rover item thinking OEM is better. So i'm about to put it all back together and see what we have!

What is your reasoning for it not to be OK? The triangular plate is steel backed, and retained with three bolts. As long as you use the same thickness washers, it wont make one bit of difference to the function of the plate its self.

You can buy shim washers as small as 5mm ID in 0.1mm increments

 

I figured the triangular locating plate needs to sit flush against the timing cover plate for lubrication reasons with the small hole at the front letting oil in. Though its not sealed or anything with a gasket so I guess you're right. 
 

I heard back from Dave at DSN looks like the gasket they provide for the A+ is at 0.75mm and for the A only is thicker at 1mm.

Ok checked the current gasket with a venier gauge, its at 0.50mm compressed, but thats not 100% accurate since measuring it is difficult being fitted already.

Others i have around are at 0.42mm.

How much compression do you think would occur with a 0.75mm gasket?

On mine there was a couple of places that hang out the side of the plate so could measure that.

Have you got feeler gauges so you can measure the difference between the 2 gears.

There doesn't appear to much clearance for the chain between gear and plate in your picture? If you push the plate out further with a thicker gasket it will get even closer. Whats the benefit of the after market pate? just lighter? I'm old and prefer steel where it rigidity is needed.

Its the one from DSN-Classics (http://www.dsnclassi...front-breather/). There is enough clearance however since the cover is fairly deep.


Small update: I received another Gasket from DSN, however after fitting it the issue still remains. I also measured the thickness of the original back plate its at 4.12mm. The current one including gasket is at 4.30mm. So 4.12 + the 0.75mm(gasket) - some compression, there we have the correct thickness; so thats the reason why the timing cog is sitting to low I guess.... 

However, with the timing cog fitting and torqued up the cam feels fairly tight to turn, is this expected ? I can't even fit a 0.01mm feeler gauge in-between the camshaft triangle locating plate and the timing cog.

Do you think it could be a result of the Vernier timing kit I have ? It is the Steel-Alloy one from MED.

Will be in contact with DSN again and report back here. I am so close to ditching this aftermarket plate and going all original...

the cog to locating plate has nothing to do with the end plate. as that is purely to do with the cam and the cog. was working on a car yesterday with a DSN timing cover fitted.

 

the oil pump is not fitted?
