J Spec 96 Spi - Just Wont Fire Now, Relay Pack? Help

Best Answer Pops_Guild , 07 April 2018 - 10:23 PM

Finally its working! Right old needle in a haystack or rather needles...

Starter Motor did work but not all the time, new one fixed that. Also had a dodgy earth cable to the engine (replaced). Relay pack also had a dodgy earth (took a day to find that) and finally the fuel pump had a loose live wire connector which made it work then not.

Anyway all a good learning experience 😊 Go to the full post

Hi folks. Bit of background. My J spec SPI min has been off the road for ground up restoration for nearly 2 years, the end is in sight and the bog standard engine has been in and working for about 6 months and runs well. But the car is 160miles from me, so I only get to do stuff every few months when I visit my inlaws.

Arrived to do a long weekend of jobs, went to start it but the battery didn't have enough oompf to fire it up but the engine did try and turn over. No Biggy I thought, ill just use the jump start pack to get it going. Attached that and nothing, assumed that was dead too. I have a mains jump start too, which usually sorts it out, and nothing again.

I can hear the fuel pump, I can hear the stepper motor, I can hear the relay pack click, but the starter motor doesn't fire, engine doesn't turn over.

I trickle charged the battery, still the same.

All of the sensor bits are new on the engine, all plugs, distributor, leads, oil, oil filter, fuel filter are new, and it was running nicely before this. I hadn't touched anything in the engine either prior to trying to start it. I've had the starter motor off, cleaned up the solenoid and tested it, it works fine off the car, put it back in and nothing. All fuses are fine.

I've read the posts on the relay pack fun n games and am thinking this could be whats gone wrong, but do they just break like that? I've had it off but im not great with the electrics so couldn't really fathom the details about how test it properly (where to connect too to check the 66ohms).

Open to suggestions. Tad fed up that it was all fine and now its not just from jump starting it.

Thanks!

No immobiliser as it's Japan car. Starter motor works as I've said. All electrical contact points are all clean, it's had a complete rebuild, i cleaned everything up before it all went back on, engine was working fine.

Gave you checked your earth points? Worth taking them off and cleaning them, that got mine running, that and a new crank speed sensor. But mine was tuning over and not firing.

Is the engine turning over. Its difficult to understand why you are trying to say.

If its not turning over, this is a fairly simple thing to diagnose and resolve.

Thanks for the replies.

Sprocket - Engine did turn over with a nearly flat battery but doesn't now, with full battery. I can hear the fuel pump, a click in the relay pack and the stepper motor when I turn to full ignition.

I have checked and cleaned all the earth points again, still no joy.

Crank sensor is the only non-new sensor part on it, i had cleaned it all up...but maybe its that?

Davemac80 - it's a Cooper 35 Ani

The system for starting isn’t that complicated. Test for battery voltage on the starter motor solenoid (to eliminate the main cable front to back). None of the sensors will stop it turning over, crank sensor inhibits fuelling not starter.
Earths from battery to body on boot floor and earth straps to engine from body at front.
Then you are left with ignition switch and connector block, MFU (relay pack) and starter solenoid (or starter but both of these you have checked).
