Best Answer area51 , 02 April 2018 - 08:40 PM

Done,

Removed all studs. Head off, on work bench. Will carry doing the seals after work this week.

The front centre stud was the pain in the a%* to remove, but all done.

Hi all,

I'm having a spot of bother removing my cylinder head from my mini (1275 engine).

All nuts have been removed, exhaust and carb manifold removed, all disconnections made, however the head is "stuck on". Any  suggestions?

(PS I have tapped the head with a rubber mallet to gently persuade, but this has not worked)

For further info, I am removing the cylinder head to replace the valve stem oil seals.

The engine is in the car.

thanks

Have you removed the studs?
The front, centre one is usually the issue as this is also used as the locating dowel, so the hole is a tighter tolerance to the stud.

I used to get school reports that said more effort required....

The front centre stud is best removed too.

Just needs a bit more pulling and tapping, assuming its not been sat outside for years.

You can sometimes get a pry bar or heavy screwdriver between the head and the water pump to get some leverage...

Thanks,

One front studs has been removed. (whilst removing thee nut)

If i'm honest, I may not have applied enough force, i.e. I want to prevent damage etc.

How much brute force does anyone recommend?

I sometimes stick a wooden hammer handle into one of the ports and pull up, sometimes that will get it loosened up and you can work it up off the remaining studs.

Don’t be afraid to use force, just DON’T try to wedge anything between the head face and the block face.
Use the double nut method to remove as many studs as you can, especially front centre.
