So after doing some searching I'm getting a little confused with what wiring loom a should go for due to the details say wiring loom for a 998 engine. Old project car which has a metro wiring loom in is in a terrible state, I'm not to clued up on the electrics so starting a fresh would be better because some of the cables have been changed to different colours and butchered..

The mini is a C reg mini sprite but has a 1275 turbo engine in it. So as far as I'm aware that means pre engaged starter and electronic ignition ( wee black module with two wires going to coil)

Any help would be much appreciated.

A loom that matches your stalks switches and instruments is the main thing. Nothing special is needed for the ignition, just 12 volts without ballast resistance. The bit that is different for a turbo engine is the fuel pump.

I'm sure we can talk you through adding the extra bits for that, either as below or using injection Mini parts.

Thanks for the reply good picture and easy to understand. I'm going to strip it all out and fit a new dash and stalk because from what I can see it's fitted with metro dash looks ok but if a problem arises it's a nightmare to sort and so I think maybe so is the stalk . So to stop confusing I'll be getting hold of mini ones so when problems arises I know what I'm dealing with. I've had a look at autosparks and so on but it's all about year manufacture so on so that's where my problem lies. Do I just purchase the standard 998 one with pre engaged starter which was originally for the car before this was swapped with what's in it now and then work off?

Probably, ring 'em for a chat. Also see the Traders  listed on TMF, like this chap.

If you're replacing the dash, decide what with before you buy a loom.

There are a few things to know about that ERA wiring diagram:

The oil warning light is used to trigger a safety cut out, if the engine stops.

So, the solenoid provides a bypass when cranking, same as ballasted ignition.

Seems to be a little more complicated than I thought.
Anyone recommend dials and stalk and wiring? since I'm having to renew the whole lot.

Whatever suits your taste and budget. Maybe see what's available secondhand? If you opt to do your own thing with individual aftermarket instruments a centre speedo loom would be easier.

It's a bit easier to make the stalks fit the wiring than it is to make them fit the column.

So been having another look around how does this look

Few wiring looms ive come across

Minisport       HAM4626 MK4/5 with pre engaged starter

Minispares    HAM4385 85/88 pre engaged starter has tacho cable built in but was left spare if only 2 cluster.

Autosparks   Do both minispares and minisport ones just different numbers

Stalks

Minisport       21A2660 indicator left hand side 84-89

                       37H8286 wiper  84-89

Minispares      21A2660 indicator left hand side mk4 84 - on

                       37H8286 wiper 84-89

Seems to be cheaper to go the cluster options rather than after market ones . Ive seen a few but do like the cooper 1990 1991 3 dial cluster or even the two.

Am I on the right track or miles away to getting it all sorted. And is this all compatible?

Evening EtheI. I don't have anything . They had installed a complete metro dash and stalk so ripping that out so I need to buy everything again.

I didn't expect this to be so hard haha. So many things.

Ethel since you have the knowledge would I get away with what I've listed and be compatable ? then wire in the electric fuel pump since I don't think it has it already.

The stalk I linked was common to Minis and Metros. It'd be good to clear up what's Metro and what's Mini about the steering column.

The bits you link should go together, I think. If your stalks are like my link you should be able to reuse them if they're serviceable. If not, have a look at the steering column.

Another issue is the speedo cable and drive gear

http://www.guess-wor.../Tech/ratio.htm

It'll already be a bit inaccurate if you have a full Metty setup sat on Mini sized tyres, but it'll be  a bit worse with a Mini speedo too, though you can swap the drive gear.
