Just got back from a long weekend, and went to start the car to go shopping. After a few attempts it fired but the starter motor was still cranking. Taking key out of the ignition didn't help, only solution to stop it was to pull a terminal off the battery. Now every time I reconnect the battery it starts cranking immediately. Never had this kind of problem before.

Is this likely to be a short inside the ignition switch? It would seem logical, if the feed from permanent live is connecting to the terminal that fires the starter. Unless there are any other, more likely causes.

Starter contactor welded itself closed? Once its welded shut, even if you get it disconnected it will be more prone to weld shut again. Contactor welding is more likely than and issue from ignition barrel.

Thanks - that's the first thing I'll try tomorrow, as I have a spare solenoid.

Tap the starter solenoid, should do the trick.

It's very quick to check if a solenoid is stuck on, just put something between the starter motor terminal and earth (ignition off). Even a bit of wire will do as there'll be enough current to make sparks if you scratch the end  against bare metal.

Indeed it was the solenoid - could have bridged it as Ethel suggested but decided to swap it out for the new one I already had. Reconnected the battery and...nothing happened! No cranking straight away, but ran (eventually) after turning the key. Thanks for all the help.

Sorry, not familiar with the word contactor to describe the solenoid so wasn't sure what you meant.
