Evening all, just had my work transit towed away. Suspected head gasket failure / oil cooler . Have a look at this bad boy. Never knew a vehicle that takes "Black Coolant"

From personal experience I would say with that amount of oil in the coolant!
the oil cooler. ( Retired Workshop manager for a large construction company
running at the time 145 Transits)

I'm with Spraybeater, it sounds like oil cooler because with headgasket failure you usually loose water or it mixes with a bit of oil and starts to go white/cream as the oil around the headgasket is in most places not under pressure, in this case your reservoir is full of black oil so it suggests that the oil had been pumped into the coolant under pressure.

on 230K is it even worth bothering to fix it?
Can bet the rest of the van is also pretty ropey.

There is bleach in washing powder, not sure if that will effect the engine.
Not sure it really matters on an old transit?

I had the problem with a Freelander TD4. The pressure from the oil split the expansion bottle. The garage used neat truck wash, and it took several goes to clear it out.

Neat Truck wash was always what we used, was also good for cleaning out Truck intercoolers
after Turbocharger failures!
