Hello gents (&ladies?)

I'm in Ann Arbor Michigan ('merican).

I've had a 1962 Morris Cooper for 30 years. It's a real Cooper. Was 997 obviously but a previous owner did a 1275 swap. I did an S disc swap in 1991. I've got a RH petrol tank that I found in Scotland in 1990.

I've got one 997 caliper in a box if anyone needs it.

Car is black with white roof. Was originally white with black roof. I'll be changing it back soon.

The big things I'm working on...

  1. New subframes. They're not rusty just banged up from PO's jacking on them. I have a BL rear subframe but I need to buy a front.
  2. Cylinder head. I've got an "Austin America" smog head. Any ideas? I'd like to replace with something that at least looks period correct. I will be sticking with the 1275 block however. 997s are rare here.
  3. Adjustable front suspension arms and rear camber bracket.
  4. SEATS. this is the big one. I need new interior and have no seats at the moment. Interior should be Red/GrayBrocade. I like the Newton Commercial buckets but too much $ for my blood. I'd like to do Cobra Classics seats trimmed in the proper Red/GrayBrocade. There is a way to do this yes??? Which vendor?

The other thing I'd like to do (but less critical) is replace boot and doors with the available aluminum skins. I just saw these. Anyone have experience with them? Cheaper than sheet metal (?). Seems like a no-brainer. My metal door skins are new BL but I lust after alloy. My boot is Mk3 so it needs to be replaced anyway.

THANKS ALL - info appreciated.

~Mark

Image is from 1987 when I bought the car.

Hi,
Have you thought of putting in a roll back Sun roof, it would look more period especially with a black roof. I know they expensive but Newton commercial are the dogs. What does an Austin America head look like?

The America head is a 12G1316 and is almost identical to a typical 12G940 except for the added smog pump ports. You can block these off with socket headed plugs and they're not very noticeable.

Yes, I actually did do a Britax sliding roof.  I'll try to find a newer picture. Yes Newton Commercial seats are nice. I'd get the buckets (vs recliners) if I had the $.

I've got them blocked off with plugs but it's annoying. :) Is that casting decent? Maybe I'll just try fill welding/grind them away?

It's a perfectly good casting except for the added ports, which don't have any effect once blocked. It's very similar to the 12G940 with identical chambers and ports AFAIK.

The thing is, if you don't like, then you don't like it. If something just pi55ed me off a bit I would have to change it.

So I talked to Cobra and they can do their bucket Classic seat with gray brocade vinyl/red vinyl if I supply it from Newton Commercial. There's an up charge for custom cutting but I'm excited to do it. The seats will match the rest of the Newton Commercial interior. I like the idea of doing a somewhat "period mod" car.

I am tempted by the aluminum 5 port head that's made in USA. It's 11 stud so it looks like a proper Cooper head. Bit pricey tho.
