Hi

I had a simllar cutting out issue also had the ECU reporting 13 - Fuel pump relay or purge valve

Bought a new relay pack still same.

Turned out to be the purge value

Way I found was to disconnect the purge value with it disconnected it never cut out.

Put a new one on and its never done it since.

Shame I wasted cash on the relay pack as they are quite expensive, purge value was cheap

Hope you get it sorted

Cheers for the info... it is like a dead stop ... I’ll give that a try but also I have remembered that sometime before when driving, it could cut dead like an electric fault and have nothing when it’s moving with ignition on, then spring back into life and carry on... and keep doing that... then I fixed the engine stabiliser bushes and it seemed ok... til this (which it also had done before). Looking at the tension on the map sensor loom, and going on the fact that when unplugged it’s the same effect as the cut outs, that’s why I’m headed towards that or the main relay (again... it’s been cutting out since the code reset and no codes showing so I’m thinking it was a low battery that is now charged?)

The quest continues lol

is there a way of snapshotting the data on the ACR4? i see it has a pc connection port?

Yes, you press the m+ button and it saves the current screen, 10 pages max, i think.

But, you need the PC kit to save/print the saved screens.

The kit came with a serial cable, power supply and software on a floppy disk!!!

Its very clunky to use and very hard to find, software was available on the wed site, i am going back many years now

Ok guys, bit of an update...

The car is fitted with a superchips race icon piggyback ECU which was spliced into the white/black wire coming from the actual ecu. I am lead to believe that this is the wire to both the Rev counter and the coil pack. It was space connected and the connectors look a bit green, so my thoughts are either :-

A) the terminals are not connecting properly under heat/wet or
B) the piggyback ECU is starting to play up, which I’m not sure is possible?

So, new questions are

1) is it possible for the piggyback ECU to have this intermittent fault? Symptoms are a dead electrical cut to the Rev counter and, I presume, coil pack that can come back as quickly as it went and the temperature gauge maxing out (making me think the MEMS ECU has power to send a signal to the gauge). What I don’t get is why the temp gauge would max out when the Rev counter dies? Wires are on separate circuits as far as I’m aware

2) I have bypassed it for now and the car is running ok in the garage so does it actually do much on an otherwise standard engine (does have a K&N replacement filter (not cone, original) and a 5 speed box) and will I miss it? If not I will solder the white/black wire back together and do away with it :)

Cheers in advance

I dont think you will miss it at all. One came with my car along time ago and when it was rebuilt I never installed it back.

So... Monday morning surgery... had ½ hour before work so decided to remove the superchips box as the engine is standard apart from a k&n replacement filter (not cone) and a 5 speed box

The yellow and yellow/black wires were spade connected to the white/black wire from the ECU which I believe is the feed for the coil pack and Rev counter?

The earth was ring terminalled to the 10mm bolt holding the ECU bracket

The red live was solder spliced into the white wire on the black ECU plug... that MAY be where my problem was. As I played with the loom and started unpicking the tape to unsolder it, the white wire broke and looked like it had been marginal before. Also when I stripped it back further it was kinda green, so I trimmed it back more and put a new piece in

Just wondering if a marginal connection on this could cause an intermittent cut out due to only having like three or four rough strands holding it on?

Or is this another straw being clutched? Lol
