Evening TMF,

I've got some play in my drivers front wheel, and want some advice on what it could be please! I fitted a new wheel bearing, this made no difference, track rod ends are brand new, I've checked the balljoints, I'm not 100% sure but when I tightened them so that they couldn't move there was still play (will redo this). Any ideas  , got MOT coming up soon!

That'll be either steering rack, steering rod end or a loose steering arm,

Or a combination of these.

This is exactly what I have wrong with my car, it has a new bearing and that seems to be ok for a few miles then its coming back again so much so that I have brake wobble... its doing my bloody head in!

Probably worn hub, drive flange or conical washer.

Thanks guys, didnt think to have a look at the steering rack, track rod end is brand new but rack and track rods themselves are ancient, if that doesnt solve it Ill try a new hub

Not sure what this comments about? If you read the post youll see I have stripped it down and replaced the bearing and track rod end and its made no difference, Im asking what else its likely to be, keep your narky comments to yourself 😴

Sometimes the inner plastic bush wears out(specially the passenger side) and then the rack is loose.
Turn fully to one side, grab the track rod and shake it all about... 🙄
Or hold it and have someone wobble the steering and feel for play.
Happened to me once and took me a week to figure this out... 😂

I would certainly suspect steering rack.

With that much play it should be pretty obvious where the problem lies to be honest, but the phone video is too shaky to see what is and isn't moving.

In fact, with that much play you could probably take the wheel off and waggle the brake disc - would give you a better view.

Steering rack wear, best removed and reconditioned
