Hello,

Changing the exhaust from the cat back tomorrow. A few question as I really don't have a clue.

The bolts are rusted to buggery, is that area safe to apply a heat torch if I can't get the bolt out???

Looking at the flange it's already separating, do you think it best to cut the bolts down the middle???

The cat flange gasket, does it matter which way around it goes???

Cheers.

Cut and replace the bolts, you'll have a fair fight with those.

If you're replacing cat back you probably won't need that gasket - it looks like yours is a ball & socket type joint, I'd just use a smear of exhaust past one the mating faces,

i wouldn't bother - you'll just end up burning the paint of the floor (inside & out) and would still have a fight with the bolts anyway

don't think you'd be wanting to reuse the bolts even if you could get them off, so save yourself a lot of time and effort and cut them off

Failed miserably, cut the bolt to get the pipe off easy enough but I couldn't for the life of me get what remains of the bolt head and thread seperated from the cat flange, I spent hours cutting, grinding, smashing and drilling to no avail (stayed clear of heat as advised). Started it up as I was curious what it would sound like without silencers, horrible! I need to get it to a garage where they can get better leverage and some air powered tools on it.

My final question on this one, will the car (mpi) be ok to drive just over a mile to the garage with the exhaust ending at the cat?

Cheers folks.

Unfortunately the cat itself has studs at each end, not bolts.
You'll have to drill out what remains of the studs and replace with bolts instead

Can someone explain why not, what harm does it do? Cheers.

Is there a big hole next to your exhaust?

Yes, it's the heat shield though, not the floor.

Hmm this was my thought, after all it's only the silencers that are missing. Any other opinions, does it make a difference been a mpi?
