Hi all
Ive covered about 300 miles so far since getting the mini on the road and all seems pretty good. Temperature gauge sits at around 85-90. Oil pressure 40+

As Ive never driven or owned a classic car before I was pottering around only getting up to 50mph and easing off..
well today I decided that since I was on a stretch of dual carriageway Id see if the mini could actually do 70mph... it couldnt... we barely hit 60 and thats with the speedo being slightly wobbly so in reality it was more like 57ish. This was a 2 mile flat road with my foot flat to the floor.
Its a standard 998 a+ engine

Im not complaining as I plan on spending every sunny weekend zooming around B roads but was just curious if this seems too slow

As above, my 998 is very neglected but sits at 70 easy enough and still has a bit in it

Its got all fresh oil, filters, plugs, rotor arm/cap etc.

Ill admit the carb I havent touched but it seems to run nicely. Just fantastically slow

More air and fuel in and out gives more power.
Get the carb checked out, time it up and get electronic ignition if you dont have it.

Make sure exhaust hasnt been crushed flat underneath etc (less likely issue)

Check valve clearances and do a compression test. Valve seat erosion from using unleaded fuel on a leaded head can cause power loss

First check for me would be that youre getting full opening of the throttle.

How would I check this? Im guessing push the accelerator pedal down then check if theres any more movement to be had at the carb?

In addition make sure you don't have carpet, floor Matt or a combination stopping the pedal going through full travel.
