The Best 10" Brake Setup?

Hi guys,

 

I have a '78 Mini 1000 (built in '77) with the standard brake setup. Drums all round, black tag master cylinder, diagonal split, no servo and no pressure reducing valve.

 

As part of my resto i'm redoing the braking system to make it more effective/ safer while retaining the standard look of the car. 

 

I will be installing 7.5" Calipers at the front with standard spaced drums at the rear.

 

I have bought a yellow tag master cylinder to replace the existing black tag as i always had troubles with trapped air.

 

I'm not intending on running a servo but may add one depending on how the pedal feels once the car is complete.

 

So my question is what brake line set up to go for? Front to Rear split? What size rear cylinders? Will the originals be okay to use? And will I need a pressure reducing valve?

 

I realise i'm asking a lot of questions but I want to get this set up right for obvious reasons.

The yellow tag has different size bores. Split must be front/rear.
I have the same setup, will try and find out what rear cylinder diameter I used.

There's a page on the Somerford Minis site that explains the different rear cylinders, from memory you'll be able to easily work out what you need.

Thanks for confirming the Front/ Rear split. Did you use a pressure reducing valve?  

 

There's a page on the Somerford Minis site that explains the different rear cylinders, from memory you'll be able to easily work out what you need.

EDIT: I mean P.D.W.A. - Pressure Differential Warning Activator not pressure reducing valve

It would be interesting to have a comparison of the braking force each system provides - presumably BMC/Leyland/rover must have produced figures at some point? Of course there's no substitute for forward observation and treating all other road users as idiots!

The Minispares and Somerfords lists are good but none of the setups listed exactly match the setup I will be using. Hence me asking for advice...

IMO one of the best non-servo 7.5 inch disc set-up for road use is single line, 5/8 bore master cylinder, 5/8 bore rear cylinders and rear brake pressure regulator set at about 240psi to prevent lock-up of rear brakes under heavy braking on wet roads.

This is what I use with standard S calipers on the front, and have tried this using both silicone and standard type brake fluid. The main advantage I have found with silicone fluid is the rear cylinders don't seize up, but a downside is the silicone fluid costs more than standard type.
