So, my latest DIY project on the mini....

I have a set of old Cibie Oscar fog lights. I used to have the old covers repainted in an inverted colour scheme, but the were old and brittle, got smashed and eventually thrown in the bin ten years ago. Recently I've been looking to replace them in the same colour sheme. Then I had a 'brilliant' idea in the pub one night.

I had an old brown leather jacket. I had some black dye. I could make some!

They seem easy enough to make, but very time consuming stitching by hand. Anyone wanting to do it could follow the pics as a guide.

Cut circle to fit front of lamps, 19.5cm for mine - I found an old compass to mark it out

cut rectangle for sides 15cm x 55cm (about) make/stitch 2cm fold over for tightening with something - an old shoelace in my case!

Stitch circle to rectangle 5mm from edge

Tie round fogs!

Next up I'm going to attempt a Cibie logo stenciled in white acrylic paint, it might ruin it all, we'll see.

As I had this stuff lying around the cost is £0 for 'custom leather' covers

Would I recommend it? Only if you have a lot of free time!!!

Nice job! I have some cheap soft plastic covers on my SLR700's that are quickly becoming degraded by abrasion and bug strike - these should be much more resilient as long as you give them a good coat of Dubbin or similar waterproofer.

Had a go at an old Cibie logo.

The original from the set I had was a bit complex, so had a go at a simpler version. Didn't bother with pics of the stencil as that's pretty straight forward to make. But worth noting - Scalpels and metal rulers are the best! Ultra thin coats or it will get wrecked. Practice run first!

The finish isn't 100% perfect as you might expect, but you'd have to get on your hands and knees to see.

Maybe if someone has a little bit of money for it it might be worth getting the logo screen printed before stitching? I didn't bother looking as I didn't want to spend anything!

Excellent job! Super bit of recycling / upcycling, nice work with the logo stencilling too.
