At various times, people have balanced Ford engines on top of Mini Gearboxes, presumably using the diva and drop gears.

For 50 years, just for the hell of it, I have wanted to put a 948cc diesel A series engine in my mini pick-up.

Does anyone know of anyone who can weld a "tail" on my crank and machine it for me?

Don't know about bearing sizes but the 998cc petrol engine has the same stroke. Could you not use that crank?

2" mains, 1.75" big ends, and the nose is longer to drive the injector pump.

I like your project and am looking on with some interest, though, I tend to think you'd really be up for a billet crank.

I guess it's to do with Manx Racing that made a Ford to Mini gearbox crank conversion.

The option was either a billet crank ot a bolt on extension to convert the Ford crank to take the Mini clutch and flywheel.

Peraonally I wouldn't trust a welded on extension.

Manx cats don't have a "tail", and neither does my crank.

Find a Midget 1098 block, (2”’mains) and fit a 1071 crankshaft. This is a BULLET proof “small bore” engine. Albeit not the cheapest.

Would it not be easier to use a Mini engine & gearbox, with the diesel pistons and head together with the diesel injection system, diesel cam and diesel manifolds?

The diesel pistons are 850 bore and 998 stroke, but the 998 crank won't fit an 850 block.

I have been looking for a midget block for many years.

What do the pistons look like, I think the cheapest way would be to try to use some other production pistons, or even get them made, maybe in 1275 and use a SA 1100 crank.

For the injection pump, it should be prety simple to get somekind of keyed adaptor made up, also I thought of was the cam that was extended for the pump.

Liner a 998 block down to 850 bore size?

Good call on the linering, also whatever you do really deserves a turbo on it to get some useful oomph out if it.

Maybe stick it on an auto box too just for extra amusement!

I looked into using 1100 block, crank etc: many years ago and having pistons made  ( now, of course, it would be would be 1300 ),   but I think the lowest price that I cold get them down to was the same as twenty sets;

Also, the "nose" on the crank is an inch longer, with another key, for the drive to the injectors.

We are not talking about a lot of horsepower, even turbocharged, so if a bolt on tail will take SCA or twin cam Cortina power, a good welder ought to be able ti stick a tail on.

I wonder if Gorilla glue would do it?
