Give this a go for diagrams. There should be something that will help you.

Evening all, it`s me again. My Classic Hot Rod Mini has a nice new 45 amp alternator on it but doesn`t seem to be charging the battery. Bearing in mind that the car has only the most basic wiring can anyone put me wise as to how wire said alternator up? I`m crap at electrics and it seemed to me that everything just went to the positive side of the starter solenoid, don`t seem right to me. Any clues anyone please? A diagram would be great even if just scrawled on on the proverbial fag packet. Thanks Mini types.

Large wire will go to the solenoid .. the smaller wire will need to go to the ignition warning  lamp

If both your wires go to the solenoid .. there is the problem!

Bit more clarity: The alternator probably has three wires.

Two, the thicker brown and brown with blue trace go to the solenoid .. and are joined there by two more brown wires (to Fuse 1 and Ignition switch) and the wire to the battery.

The thinner brown with yellow trace needs to go to the ignition warning lamp ..

What you can do is use a bulb as an exciter for the alternator near the dash pod(like a standard mini has).
but simply wrap the end in foam, then tape over that onto the wiring for the bulb and simply cable tie it to the dash pod, so that the scrutineer can't fail the car and you can still run the alternator
