[HUBBA.HUBBA]

Just come back from himley, with this gear selector assembly and 2 things have puzzled me. 1 why is the length of the stabilizer shorter and 2. What's with all the extra wires and bracket round the selector rod?

is it from an SPI or MPI ? - extra electrical gubbins is apparently to inform the ECU when top gear is selected

Maybe someone has fitted an early bar to a later assembly. Everything 1275cc and 1990 onwards had longer rods because the engine was mounted 1/2" further forward in the subframe.

Don't know what its from. The bracket looks like its just added on underneath

The top steady bar is the long bit. The picture is misleading, as the old bottom rod assembly in the picture has the end of the selector hack sawed off. Another thing I notice is the bottom one (my old one) has one hole and one slot on the steady bar. On the new one it's just holes (have a look at the shadow).

It all looks the same age. Underneath the crap both bars are in good nick, still a shiny gold. I wondered if there was some kind of extending bracket on the gearbox end on newer models

I remember seeing something like this, but the only thing non mini I took the gear linkage off was a Austin maestro 5years ago...
I dont remember my MPI having so many things attached to it.

The shift rod is really short, even considering a mismatch of parts from later Minis.

 

Someone made something 'special' or it's not from a Mini, though the body itself does appear similar to that used on a Mini.

here is a Metro one with the sensor for 4th gear. so not metro.

The shift rod on my old one is hack sawed off at the end. That's way it's shorter

The one with a slot in the steady rod is the later design over the one with the holes. Not sure when the change point was though,

The one with the slot is off an spi.
