Form v112 is declaration of mot exemption
So i don't nt think it's automatically applied, but it's a simple box checking and signing exercise so long as your vehicle meets the requirements

Form v112 is the form you use when taxing your Mot Exempt vehicle at the post office. It is simply your declaration to the post office staff that you confirm you vehicle is MOT exempt and can be proceeded to be taxed without a current MOT certificate. If the vehicle has current TAX, but the MOT runs out before the TAX renewal date, the car is still MOT exempt as its entitlement is automatic, you just have to confirm at re taxing each year, that it remains non substantially altered, so is entitled to the exemption still, this is how I understand it anyway after talking directly to the DVLA last week.

Mines still a few years away from not needing an mot. In fact, it's going in tomorrow, after being off the road over winter. For some reason I feel nervous. Have spent today going over it, making sure things I can check myself seem alright. Fingers crossed.

On another note, my grandfather has a 1930s mg. He still takes it for an Mot every year just to get another set of eyes to check it over incase hes missed anything, think most sensible people would do something similar. I know I would.

are they like mini government oppression centres for cars?

LOL pretty much - they are the most soul destroying places. Even when I know I've prepared the car to within an inch of its life, there is always that little nagging thought in the back of your mind that they are going to fail it on something so petty. The problem is that most of them don't have the first clue about old cars and treat them as if they are modern cars in for their first mot at 4 years old. And then if you bring anything sporty in they take it for a spin around the centre site for a "test drive" that they are entitled to do. Basically they get to have a spin in any car they like just because they can. I hate going near the place hence why I am welcoming the mot exemption with open arms. I would gladly pay the £30.50 mot fee to NOT get tested lol

It all depends who the tester is, I have taken mine to Larne MOT station every year since 2012, a lot of the guys there are genuine enthusiasts and classic car owners themselves. They understand old cars and know how to make them pass the required tests, the most stringent of which is the brake bias. Ive had testers spend time heating up rear brakes on the rollers with the hand brake prior to testing the footbrake, going the extra mile to help it pass rather than the "computer says no" attitude. Dont get me wrong I still am nervous taking the car up for its test but its good to know its roadworthy and my own mechanicing skills are up to scratch.

Dont get me started on the dicks from Stormont who are more interested in their Irish language act or heating their mates pig farm for free rather than sorting out issues that matter to 99.9% of the population though!
