Mine was registered 1st Jan 73, so has been tax exempt for a while now, should have been MOT exempt today too by all accounts.
Mot - No Thanks?

I think that's why you did it online then, anyone claiming exemption of tax and mot for the first time need to fill in a form at the post office.
My pre 60 car is a 1957 morris minor not a mini unfortunately, be worth a few quid if it was!

I also think you need to visit the post office if the car has been SORN'd without an MOT before you can claim VHI

I stand corrected.
Strange that people are having different experiences.

Hi,
I just went online to tax it, been exempt for years, it asked me to verify no major changes and told me I'll need to confirm this every year.
Car has been sorn'd for years.
Cheers,
Gavin

What Happens if you don't need to sort the tax out til next year but the MOT has run out. Would I just not have to bother getting an MOT? Does the historic MOT bit just get automatically registered with the DVLA? or do I have to wait to I have to sort the Tax out next year and 'tick a box'?

By the sound of it you just need to insure the car then tick the box.

Hi,
When the DVLA are involved I wouldn't assume anything! Phone and check or read up on their website.
I discovered a problem with the way the DVLA introduced the SORN system.
After trying to fine me they sent a letter saying I had come across a situation they hadn't thought of and they had updated their system...
Cheers,
Gavin

Just insure it as normal, then just go onto there website to tax your car,it will then let you tick a box saying you want to tax with being mot exempt...all automatic...there page told me it had automatically noticed my car was old enough to not need an mot

Sounds about right for the dvla or whatever they are called, at least the computer is as indesisive as their actual human staff!

I thought it was only dangerous failures which prevent you from driving away from the test centre and that major failures just mean that you can't continue to drive it if the old mot is still valid.
I'm looking at joining the dark side and buying a BMW mini clubman to be able to tow them if necessary. I need to get a b+e licence first though!
I have a new F54 clubman for every day and you will not need a B+E to tow as the car trailer and a classic mini is under the MAM of 3500Kg
I have a licence to tow however I went on a weigh bridge and there is plenty of scope for more weight
