Hello

I've just returned to the mini fold and bought a 1989 1275 manual. Drove the 170 miles home, put it into reverse to park, started moving, and was then stopped. Put it into 1st, started moving and was then stopped.

Quickly figured out that the NS front wheel had movement back and forth, but was then locking. This was at all times - whether in gear or not, engine running out not.

The best way to describe it is it's the same as if the engine is off, in gear, and rocked back and forth, with resistance when the gears 'engage'.

All gears select fine with the engine running, and the car starts to move as normal, but then that wheel 'locks'.

by the way, the driveshaft is moving in sync with the wheel when rocked back and forth, and so it's not the front wheel/bearing/disc/pad at fault.

Any help would be very appreciated, as I want to play with my new toy. Thanks.

Diff or gearbox, but first check everything is free and greased.

It does indeed sound like it could be the diff.

I'd highly recommend not moving the car, either under it's own power or even pushing it and you will likely smash a hole on the gearbox if you do attempt to move it.

You can disconnect the drive shafts and them move it no problem.

Best to play it safe until you sort out what's going on, but I can't think of anything else that will give this symptom.
