Hello all.

I have gone to replace the fuse box on my 1980 clubman, as all the electrics are playing up (no lights, front or rear, fuel gauge/ engine temp gauge not working etc)

When I pulled the wires out to replace the fuse box I noticed the ends of the wires (that fit into the clips) are all corroded, what can I do to make these work again or is it going to be a replace the entire wire loom job?!

Some of them aren’t as bad as others, but I’m assuming that’s what’s causing the headlight issues (the brown wire was the most corroded & that is supposedly the wire for the headlights!!)

Thanks!

C

Are the wires corroded all the way through? If not and you've got enough to cut a bit off, get a pair of wire strippers and redo it

What I did on mine, as I had the same problem on a couple of the wires, (obviously disconnect the battery) Mine were green with corrosion and wouldn't have soldered so I cut back the minimum I could get away with as there isn't much slack in the wires, tinned the ends and soldered on brass spade terminals (with the slip over plastic insulators). If your wires are too short, you could solder on short extension pieces and use heat shrink over the join then solder on a spade terminal to the extension piece. It is fiddly and awkward to get at but mine have been fine ever since and I didn't have to disturb the fuse box.

I would suggest you contact “wired by Wilson” on here and invest in one of his replacement bladed fuse boxes they come with prewired connectors of a good length which would allow you to cut back yours without worrying that they end up too short. You could also ask if he could provide you with the replacement male connectors you will be cutting off. Good value at about £25

Plus one on this also worth investing in a ratchet crimping tool makes the world of difference to crimped joints.

Update: cut the corroded part of the wire away, soldered a new clip onto the end, now all the lights are working (except he blown front headlight)!

Next job: fuel and engine temp gauges not working!

THANKS for all your help and advice, fantastic as always !
