So my mini's points contact spring seems to have gone shot. its constantly losing its setting causing my mini to be unreliable. My mini mechanic really wants to change over to an electronic distributor, but I have my heart set on sticking with a points contact type with vac advance.

I know that the plus point of electronic ignition is its more reliable and it never needs resetting, but anything to be wary of? There are so many types of electronic distributors out there and i've heard of supposed "generic" replacements that dont have very good advance curves.

This isnt a performance car or anything, just a humble A+ 998, though I am looking to gradually get the most I can out of this engine without going to the extent of reboring or the likes. What would be better for me? Go with a simple electronic distributor, or get a replacement points one? On mini spares, the standard distributor isn't all that expensive

Keep your distributor if it’s in good nick and for one of the contactless breakers approx 30 quid. That what I would do if I were in your shoes.
I’m still on points at the mo

As dyshipfakta suggests, if your distributor is in otherwise good condition, just fit an electronic module and keep your Points & Condensor just in case.

No down side, but just watch what coil you use with these modules, they can all only take a certain minimum resistance. That information is usually provided with them.

They do seem reliable enough.

Agree with this.

It's a bit of a lottery getting hold of good quality replacement points.

If you wanted to spend a bit more you could go for a replacement distributor. I recently fitted a Powerspark one complete with a new coil, about 80 quid I think. Car is running great.

What I did was to fit a 65DM4 from a 1275 Rover mini(last of the carb engines)

I've had a 65 Dm4 on my 998A+ for 8 years now and it never misses a beat, even puts modern euro and Japanese boxes to shame....

As mentioned above the modules fit nicely inside your old distributor and retain the advance curve and vacuum. You can ask them for which coil suits, or get a new one shipped with your order

Agree the Lucas 65DM4 is good and reliable,  Had one on my 1275 tho I'm running points without any trouble

on the 998.

basically the problem I have is that the securing screw doesnt seem to hold so well anymore causing the contact points to wobble or drift away. Need to go back to the car to see if the thread is worn or something else is the problem.

In that case changing to electronic ignition may not help right? if its the thread where the securing screw screws into thats the problem, i may have to change the body of the distributor right?

Going Electronic with some kits may help as some only use one screw - just work out which of your is stripped and find a kit that secures with the other one.

Alternatively, if it is the base plate that's stripped, maybe look at tapping the hole to the next size up in a metric screw, in the smaller sizes, they are available in 0.5 mm increments.

So I thought I'd go with this electronic distributor. Price is reasonable including shipping and is only a few quid more than the electronic ignition kits (when including shipping to Malaysia).

Thoughts?

While I've not bought the 998 version, I have bought a number of 1275 ones and found the curve in them spot on. There's an awful lot of replacement distributors out there that are all over the place.

I think you'll be happy with one of them.
