Anyone ever look into adding a modern 6 speed gearbox onto a 1275? a narrow powerband, high revving 998 (possibly 850) comes to mind. Was looking at a really beautiful rebuilt 1275 for not a lot of $ and thought it would work in a mini if the right gearbox could be sorted. Not made of $, I understand someone is building Mini transmissions as 6 spds now, can only guess how much that costs.Maybe the engine would be too large as in a standard layout, I have a 3cyl turbo in a mini and it still takes up some room.

Always looking for something fun & innovative, always helps to have others weigh in, especially if they've tried & have suggestions. If you don't understand why, just ignore this please. I don't understand why someone would put a V8 in a Mini, I just ignore those posts.

I'd also like to comment that I've seen a FWD gearbox rotated (around the input shaft) so that the drive was in font of the engine making it more midengine. I believe it was a Toyota engine track car down under.

Be sure you're sitting down before looking at the price

I've thought about this too. The similar concept was used in the Montego and Maestro with the VW gearbox. I'm guessing they used a different crankshaft similar to the RWD engines

However, because on a mini the A-series engine rotates the opposite direction to the wheels (this is why the idler gear is needed) you need to flip the engine around 180 degrees so that it'll spin the right way.

I think if you're going to that much effort to totally rebuild the front subframe you'd swap in a newer engine anyway like a Honda engine
