Hello there,

Complete mini newbie here, just picked up my 1989 Austin Mini Mayfair (picture attached), drives great but the electrics do not seem to function properly. The brake lights, horn, wipers do not work, the indicators are intermittent but the hazards work fine, and the headlights do not work other than flashing the high beam. I suspect with the amount not working that it's likely a fuse but I could do with some pointers on how to replace these?

The car was put through its MOT, with no advisories, by the previous owner only 2 weeks ago, so I doubt it is anything serious.

Also, apologies if this is a common post, like I said I'm new around here :)

A lot of the electrical problems are due to poor earth connections and poor connections to the fuse box, I would look at the fusebox first and check fuses then check and clean all connections to the fuse box.

Clean the fusebox and wiring connections, then clean the wiring connections behind the grille and also the main loom earths at the drivers side next to the screenwash bottle

I suspect you know where your fuse box is? Just in case you’re unsure it’s located to the left side of the bulkhead slightly to the left of where the carb sits. Unless it has been moved by the previous owner.

Clean all the connections on the starter solenoid as that's where they originate from after the main battery cable, clean the battery terminals and the earth strap to boot floor.

You can find wire diagrams that should help you trace things down here:

Thanks for the tips, I'll have a poke around with the tester tonight and clean the fuse box up. The dials aren't working either, apart from the fuel and coolant lights, would that be likely the same problem?

Update: managed to get everything working apart from the gauges. It’s a 3 clock dash, the lighting works but none of the needles move. Any ideas?

If it turns out to be the printed circuit board they are available new from Mini Spares. There may be a couple types so make sure you get the one that matches yours.
