How does one find out if he needs leaded or unleaded? I'm looking at a 1991 mini 1000 with a 1.3l motor inside, and just wanted to check here what most say... The owner is an old italian who barely speaks any english.... :/

The only way is to remove the head and remove a valve.

I use Morrison's or Asda unleaded, if I'm able to get Tesco 99 at a decent price I use it, all my engines are unleaded converted

I use premium from the local garage - haven't got a high enough compression ratio to require higher octane fuel.

To be on the safe side, tank super+/Premium and then find out once I get the car in the garage? Anything else I could do? Check engine numbers or so?

I use the Shell 98 Ron, but I have 11.1:1 CR. I add 'Castrol Valvemaster Plus' as I have some stock of this. When it is all gone I'll switch to another lead replacement and octane booster.

Edited to add that I've just seen loads of Castrol Valvemaster Plus for sale on-line - great!

I have also been using Shell V-Power '99' octane with Valvemaster Plus for about last 5 years.

Had been great until about 3 weeks ago when I refilled with V-Power as usual, and engine has been pinking ever since.

And this is in a 1293 which is not running anything as high 11:1, mine is probably more like 9.75:1

Shell V Power + millers vspe power plus, as my valves are too big for unleaded seats.

BP next best when I can't get shell, never, ever supermarket ****, even the daily derv gets v power, makes it drive so much cleaner.

I use 98 supreme from Mobil here in NZ.
It's as high as it gets here before using aviation fuel

I use Super in my MPi S Works. Runs noticeably better than 95 RON. (Judged from doing the same journey again and again.)

Anything 95, and the car will be mapped for it too. It means running 99 will give it a safety buffer but will allow regular fuels.

Unless you're high compression or turbo it shouldn't make any difference.
