The advisory on the MOT said the wheel bearing was worn but just want to check on here first. I jacked the front up and grabbed the OS wheel and could feel the looseness in the left and right direction but no movement in the up and down direction, does this indicate wheel bearing or would that also have up and down movement?

A wheelbearing usually has movement in the 12,3,6 and 9 positions but not always. Best to get an assistant to help by re-creating the play

Normally, just 9 & 3 would indicate track rod end, but I’m pretty sure any MoT tester would know what they’re looking at with something so simple.

Working in the trade, (not MOT’s). Never take the MOT paperwork as gospel. As already said movement should be in both 3,6,9 &12

Testing for TRE as said get an assistant to pull down on the track rod while you ‘wobble’ the wheel from side to side if the play disappears this will point to the track rod.

Wheel bearing again with an assistant ‘wobble the wheel’ then get an assistant to press the brake to see if it stops the movement
If it does this would point towards the wheel bearing being foobared.

Thanks will do these tests asap, noticed the steering is a little funny lately at higher speeds

Simple test for wheel bearings - apply the brakes and then try and wobble the wheel. No movement then for sure it is the wheel bearings, if it still moves then could be tie rod ends, steering rack or swivel pins.

have a listen when you go round corners a worn bearing can make a woom woom woom sound when under pressure of cornering

if u have a different noise on n/s to o/s then u have the answer

Best way I have found to test wheel bearings on the mini is very low speed very tight turns. If the bearing is gone you can often hear scrape noises.

Still wobbles when brakes are applied. Put a bar on the steering arm and applied pressure and it went away, does this mean track rod ends or could it be something else?

Sounds like track rod ends or steering rack. can you see the play?

If it was the rack would the other side wobble as well? The other side has no play thanks
