seem to remember the vizard book saying you can't have too many breathers on a big bore engine.

yes but that is only if you are not running any vent system through the inlet.

A catch can does not have to be smelly or leaky. I bought a baffled catch can from my local parts shop as I was getting a bit of oil buildup in my air filter case (and I had a Christmas voucher to use).

This one fits in perfectly in the corner of the engine bay

This one is completely sealed too, no extra smell. It just gets installed in the middle of the breather hose and is now connected to the carb port

Possibly it's overkill or unnecessary, but I've collected a little bit of oil and moisture in there in the past 1000km and in my mind it's better getting trapped in there than going into the engine.

so that is going back into the inlet? and does the same job as the cans on the existing engine ports.

Yes, it goes from the tappet cover breather can to the catch can and then onto the carb port. The tappet breather is 50+ years old and might not be working very well anymore as it was letting a lot of oil vapour through. The breather on most rocker covers aren’t baffled either so having some kind of oil trap might be a good idea?

I also have a Smiths PCV valve that I think might help
