The following is a list from an engine bought on EBAY,

Painted and photographed well and listed for £2500

A not so gentle reminder of  BUYER  BEWARE

A complete engine and gearbox advertised as a 1380 fully reconditioned with a modified head, high lift cam 1.5 rockers and recon box.

On stripping :

More muck inside than out

New 1.5 roller rockers and rocker cover, tappets set at 0.11" rocker studs loose.

Head standard, head studs not all tight, 2 like egg timers, 2nd hand head gasket, guides worn, 33/29 valves

Pistons new, 5 out of 8 top ring gaps on thrust sides

Flywheel bolt tightish but not lock tabbed

Crank scrap...fretting built up with weld, left as a scab on one side and attacked by an angle grinder on the other. End float 0.012" conrod side clearance 8, 12 16 and 20 thou. The main bearing at the flywheel end has strange marks. Shell bearings scratched, with some embedded debris.mNEY41i.jpgireEWewm.jpg

Primary gear...bush badly chipped, shrapnel inside, clearance 0.016"

Push rods big pips on ends, 2nd hand followers, unmarked cam, 2nd hand oil pump, oil pressure relief valve almost jammed with muck.

Grey deposits left inside the block from honing after the reboring...basically the cast iron from machining which will work as grinding paste.

Timing chain and gears very worn 2nd hand single chain with a broken tensioner pad.

Gearbox seriously 2nd hand with all bearings worn, painted over in silver without being cleaned off.

The selector rod end pin (inside the box) which selects all gears was loose, meaning unable to select gears or stuck in gear.

Gearbox had never been cleaned internally.

The oil gauze was stuffed with bits of old rubber, so potential oil starvation.

The whole engine gearbox had been built using loads of silicon sealer, which is never a good sign, many stud / bolt holes were jammed with it.

I really dread to think what would have happened had this been started, thankfully due to TFM we managed to find out before it went into the car...

BUYER  BEWARE

Wow, shocking. Was this a one-off private seller or a business?

Don't settle for buyer beware no need he has broke trade description Ask him for a refund if not Give him some seller aware

a registered ebay seller supposedly good makes no odds if hes done a bad thing.

there's a place called moneyclaim online .gov.uk

go get your money back for little outlay  £25 gets the paperwork started then most people will pay back then as they know you mean business if he decides not to pay then a further £25 gets the court date it maybe a little more pending the amount you are claiming.

don't think OMG its a official court cant handle it. there are no solicitors judge doesn't like it (unwanted costs)

its just like seeing the headmaster at school, you one side of table them the other and judge sits on the end you present your evidence he produces his

you have all the evidence in picture form

ebay advert showing hes lied

Judge makes his decision

you win he pays your costs plus fees loss of earnings for being in court. IF!!! you lose which is unlikely you only pay court fees and maybe his days costs

takes 3/4 months start to finish

I make it a policy to not buy anything on EBay where I have to trust someone to have put something together correctly. Too many jokers out there.
