The following is a list from an engine bought on EBAY,
Painted and photographed well and listed for £2500
A not so gentle reminder of BUYER BEWARE
A complete engine and gearbox advertised as a 1380 fully reconditioned with a modified head, high lift cam 1.5 rockers and recon box.
On stripping :
More muck inside than out
New 1.5 roller rockers and rocker cover, tappets set at 0.11" rocker studs loose.
Head standard, head studs not all tight, 2 like egg timers, 2nd hand head gasket, guides worn, 33/29 valves
Pistons new, 5 out of 8 top ring gaps on thrust sides
Flywheel bolt tightish but not lock tabbed
Crank scrap...fretting built up with weld, left as a scab on one side and attacked by an angle grinder on the other. End float 0.012" conrod side clearance 8, 12 16 and 20 thou. The main bearing at the flywheel end has strange marks. Shell bearings scratched, with some embedded debris.
Primary gear...bush badly chipped, shrapnel inside, clearance 0.016"
Push rods big pips on ends, 2nd hand followers, unmarked cam, 2nd hand oil pump, oil pressure relief valve almost jammed with muck.
Grey deposits left inside the block from honing after the reboring...basically the cast iron from machining which will work as grinding paste.
Timing chain and gears very worn 2nd hand single chain with a broken tensioner pad.
Gearbox seriously 2nd hand with all bearings worn, painted over in silver without being cleaned off.
The selector rod end pin (inside the box) which selects all gears was loose, meaning unable to select gears or stuck in gear.
Gearbox had never been cleaned internally.
The oil gauze was stuffed with bits of old rubber, so potential oil starvation.
The whole engine gearbox had been built using loads of silicon sealer, which is never a good sign, many stud / bolt holes were jammed with it.
I really dread to think what would have happened had this been started, thankfully due to TFM we managed to find out before it went into the car...
